When treatment is delayed
A cavity that could have been treated with a simple filling can progress to root canal territory within months. Treating early means less drilling, less cost, and a better long-term prognosis.
Definition
Cavity treatment removes decayed tooth tissue and restores the tooth to its original form and function.
Early cavities (enamel/dentin) are restored with tooth-colored composite resin — completed in a single visit.
Moderate cavities are restored with ceramic or resin inlays/onlays fabricated via digital CAD/CAM for a more durable result.
Deep cavities reaching or near the pulp (nerve) may require root canal treatment before a final crown is placed.
Early detection during regular check-ups prevents simple cavities from progressing to more complex and costly treatments.
Local anesthesia is administered before any drilling; discomfort during the procedure is reported to be minimal, and pain sensitivity varies by individual. Some sensitivity may persist for a few days afterward.
Composite resin fillings are reported to last approximately 5–10 years on average. Longevity depends on the size of the filling, the location, biting forces, and oral hygiene.
Very early enamel lesions (white spot lesions) can sometimes be remineralized with fluoride and improved oral hygiene. Once decay has progressed into dentin, professional treatment is required.
